SRA-497B - Cyber-crime and cyber-warfare will be offered for the first time Fall Semester 2015 at the University Park campus.  The course, developed by Gerry Santoro, Ed Glantz and Pete Forster covers methods, techniques, laws and policies related to cyber-crime and cyber-warfare.

Deloitte Cyber Threat Case Competition

IST events and announcements

IST Future Forum – Thursday, Jan 29, 2015 – 10 am to  4 pm  Please encourage students to participate.  We have 40 companies coming to IST to recruit students for internships and fulltime positions.

Competitions:

Deloitte National  Case Competition – Teams of 4, freshmen through juniors with a 3.3 GPA or higher.  Apply by Jan 30, 2015.  Chance to win an expense paid trip to compete at the National level at Deloitte University in Texas

Deloitte IST  Case Competition – Teams of 2 to 4, sophomores and juniors with a 3.3 GPA or higher.  Apply by Feb 6, 2015 in Compass.  Chance to win cash prizes.

Deloitte Cyber Threat Competition – All students with a 3.2 GPA or higher.  Apply in person at the  kick-off event on Wednesday, January 28.  Details can be found in Compass.

Workshops for Students:

Johnson & Johnson Future Leaders Program – Freshmen & sophomores.  This is a set of three professional development  workshops and excel training sessions.  Students can find additional information in Compass and need to apply to participate by January 30, 2015. President Obama on Privacy

He mentioned several new steps for privacy protection: 

1. Introducing new legislation to create a single, strong national standard so Americans know when their information has been stolen or misused. Companies would have to notify consumers of a breach within 30 days. 

2. Encouraging more companies to offer credit reports for free.

3. Introducing a consumer privacy bill of rights, identifying principles to protect personal privacy and ensure that industry can keep innovating. For example, consumers have the right to decide what personal data companies collect from them, and how companies use that data. The right to know that your personal information collected for one purpose can’t then be misused by a company for a different purpose. The right to have your information stored securely by companies that are accountable for its use. There ought to be some basic baseline protections across industries. 

4. Taking a series of actions to protect the privacy of children. Proposing student digital privacy act. Data collected on students in the classroom should only be used for educational purposes, to teach our children, not to market to our children. Prevent companies from selling student data to third parties for purposes other than education. Prevent any kind of profiling that outs certain students as disadvantages as they go through school.

IST Seminar on Human Trafficking

The College of Information Sciences and Technology is sponsoring a seminar on Human Trafficking to help raise awareness of the growing human trafficking problem in Pennsylvania and launch a dialogue on issues related to sex trafficking and strategies for prevention, intervention, and interdiction.
