Research opportunities for undergraduates

Occasionally undergraduate students ask me about opportunities to participate in research.  If you are interested, here is a link to a Penn State resource that may help:

Intelligence Community Virtual Fair

Forwarded from the IST Office of Career Solutions...

Subject: FW: IC Virtual Fair

Hi Folks,

A flyer for the Fall 2014 IC Virtual Career Fair is enclosed for your
distribution. Registration is open now; the event is on 23 SEP.

I recommend you have a targeted distribution to students.

In the past, the kids who have benefitted the most are those who already know a
thing or two about what they want to do, i.e. have done some research in terms
of where their skill sets and interests best fit within particular
offices/functional area within a few agencies ... and have already prepped
their resumes accordingly. The target audience is exceptional students looking
for internships, co-ops, fellowships, or other student opportunities within the
IC.

Kids should not participate if they are looking for general information; they
can just read agencies' "student opportunities" web sites for that.

On the other hand, students who have already interned for the IC won't get
anything out of this.

The other thing we all have to be honest about is GPAs and student performance
in terms of their chances for an IC internship. From what I've seen, kids with
lower than a 3.7 in humanities and 3.2 in STEM have a hard time getting even a
first look.

The flyer is here.

IST Career Fairs and events

Every year, IST's Office of Career Solutions and Corporate Engagement holds two career fairs exclusive to the College of IST -- Pro Expo in the fall and Future Forum in the spring. These events allow students to explore career and internship opportunities while giving employers exclusive access to our impressive pool of talented students.

I encourage students, beginning in their freshman year, to take advantage of these fairs to look at possible careers, search for internships, and finally search for jobs upon graduation.
